In Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha, Nanoha Takamachi is a sweet if naive third-grader. However she has always felt like she is missing something in her life: all the people around her have someone their are very close to but she lacks this.
However, Nanoha is no longer an “ordinary” third grader when she meets and helps the wounded ferret, who just happens to be a mage from another planet, Yuuno Scrya. He has come to Earth to gather the “Jewel Seeds,” mysterious artifacts containing great power. Nanoha agrees to help him, but the task seems harder than presented when she meets Fate Testarossa, another girl searching for the Jewel Seeds.She fought Fate Testarossa in an winner- takes -all battle.Later in the series,Nanoha and Fate bacame best friends with Arisa and Suzuka.
Nanoha A’s
In A’s, six months after the first season, Nanoha still remains in contact with her best friend Fate. However, things take an unexpected turn when she is assaulted by a special “Belka” type mage, Vita of the Wolkenritter. Just in time to save her comes Fate, but Vita also has backup. The group of the four, the Wolkenritter, are seeking mage’s “Linker Cores” for an unknown purpose and manage to steal Nanoha’s.

Fate finally starts to question her mother's motives, as Arf has always been there for her, but still refuses to join Nanoha and fully accepts her challenge to a winner-takes-all battle for the Jewel Seeds. When Fate loses, Precia appears and steals the Jewel Seeds. Fate tentatively joins up with the Time-Space Administration Bureau, and it is revealed that her memories of the past were copied, and that she is a clone of Precia's biological daughter, Alicia Testarossa. Fate does not take this news well and collapses after Precia shows that she truly hates her.
Nanoha A’s
In A's, Fate and Arf join the Time-Space Administration Bureau, as a temporary mage, and go back to Earth to team up with Nanoha again. She arrives barely in time to save Nanoha who had just been beaten by Vita, Fate manages to hold Vita back until Signum arrives, where she is beaten as well, even having Bardiche cut in half, although Bardiche is easily fixed using the Recovery skill.
After escaping from the Guardian Knights, Nanoha introduces Fate to her friends, Arisa and Suzuka, as a transfer student .
Early on in the season, Bardiche is upgraded, along with Nanoha's Raising Heart, to be able to compete with the Wolkenritter's Belka type weapons, and is renamed "Bardiche Assault" .Nanoha and Fate later in the season, meet a sickly girl, Hayate, after being introduced by Suzuka, who is actually the master of the book of darkness.
Fate along with Nanoha are forced to fight Hayate, as the Book of Darkness. However, during the fight Suzuka and Arisa discover Nanoha and Fate's true identity when the duo are trying to protect them from the Book of Darkness' attack.
Fate is later then captured by the Book of Darkness and thrown into a dream from which she will never want to wake .However, Fate remembers that her friends need her, and says a sad goodbye to the life she always wanted in favour of the life she has now.

A's opens with Hayate sleeping in her room on the night before her birthday as the Book of Darkness on her bookshelf activates, summoning the Wolkenritter. Though Hayate is an orphan, she gets an allowance from her father's friend and lives with the Wolkenritter, whom she tells civilians are her relatives. Though she is their mistress, she sees herself only as their friend .
The Wolkenritter initially comply, but after a few months, they realize that the Book of Darkness is sapping her mana to fill its pages, and that if they do not fill it with the mana of others, it will continue stealing Hayate's mana and potentially kill her. The Wolkenritter decide to keep this secret from Hayate, knowing that she would not approve fighting for her sake, and decide not to kill anyone to get it. The Wolkenritter, especially Vita, are determined to save Hayate even if it means going against her wishes.
However, what the Time-Space Administration Bureau knows that they do not is that the Book of Darkness, once completed, may stop sapping her Linker Core for pages, but that does not mean that it will stop hurting her or undo its damage. In fact, the master of the Book dies upon its completion. Nanoha and Fate try to tell the Wolkenritter about what will happen to Hayate, but their confrontation is cut short by both the interference of two masked men and the completion of the Book of Darkness with the Linker Cores of the Wolkenritter themselves.Hayate screams in horror for all of this to stop and is taken over by the will of the Book of Darkness.
Absorbing the knowledge of the Book of Darkness, she realizes the truth of everything that has been going on behind her back, the innocence of Nanoha and Fate and the sadness of the Wolkenritter. That cannot be forgotten, Hayate asserts. She is the mistress, and the Book has to do what she says. She takes control of her body again so that Nanoha can disable it and gives the Book a new name, "Reinforce". Hayate reprograms the entire Book, but something still remains inside that wants to continue its path of destruction and pain.
Hayate,Signum, Shamal, Vita and Zafira they teamed up with Nanoha and Fate to destroy the book of darkness automatic defense program.
